Path of Exile Item Upgrading

You can connect an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will show a list of upgrade components that the item can be upgraded to. You can also use the workbench for selecting an upgrade template. In either scenario, the item will be upgraded after enough upgrade components are collected.
Each component has a distinct experience multiplier, which determines how much more experience an item will gain when it is upgraded by the component. Organic components, for example have a higher multiplier of experience than mechanical components. Therefore, it is recommended to upgrade with organic components until you have reached the multiplier of experience for the next level of the equipment or weapon, and then change to mechanical upgrades.
In addition to the multiplier for experience every item also has the maximum number of upgrades that it can receive. The number of items that are upgradeable is determined by their upgradeable rank, and the type of upgrade they can receive. For instance, the highest possible weapon upgrade is a weapon with tier 10. The most commonly used upgrade is a gun with tier 6 and a armor upgrade for tier 5.
Sets
A set is a set of items that share the same bonus. Each item can be upgraded at least once. The upgrade increases the amount of bonuses you can expect to receive. The first time you upgrade an item, its initial stat will be +1. After subsequent upgrades, primary stats are increased even more (for instance the +1 bonus for 12+/13+/14+) and every time an item is upgraded one of its additional stats is increased randomly.
